The China Institute Gallery once the undiscovered gem of the Upper East Side, is now the undiscovered gem of Lower Manhattan. It's now open at its new expanded home on Rector Street.
This inaugural exhibit looks back at Chinese painting, calligraphy, porcelain and sculpture in the 3rd through 6th centuries. The newest artwork is 1400 year old! This move also marks the museum's 50th anniversary.
Most were buried underneath the ground so the soil protected them for more than a thousand years until in the late several decades and the big construction boom in China so a lot of them are newly excavated.
The qin is an ancient Chinese instrument believed to have very special powers.
